The mayor of New Haven has put forth a proposal to give voting rights to illegal immigrants. This is not the first time he has expanded the rights of those without legal documents. In fact, New Haven seems determined to be its name, a new haven for illegal aliens.

While the debate rages on about the impact of illegal aliens on the United States, another question came to me. If illegal aliens can have all the rights of citizens, where is the value of citizenshp? Are we devaluing what we have?

If we want people to come here legally and become citizens, there had to be a value to that citizenship. Otherwise there is no incentive. We already have very lax penalties for breaking the immigration laws. With little benefit and little penalty, the problem will continue to grow.

Immigration is not a simple issue. We want immigrants to come, to become part of the United States, and build their dreams. We also want them to respect the laws of this land. How can we expect them to do that when the first law break has no consequences?

I’m amazed at the number at the number of articles that appear at this time of year giving advice. They range from gifts you never give to how to stay healthy during the holidays. I have never, however, read any article that actually contained useful advice. They’re generally one size fits all ideas that assume everybody is identical.

One article I saw this morning stated you should NEVER give an appliance as a gift. To illustrate the tip, there was a photo of a Kitchen Aid mixer. I happen to know several amateur cooks that would be thrilled to get a Kitchen Aid mixer for a gift. By the same token, last week on the news the anchor was discussing generators and went on about what a great gift this would be for your husband or father. Personally if anyone in my family got me a generator for a gift, I’d disown them.

My favorites are all of the holiday recipes that recommend substitutions so you can be healthy. My favorites recommend substituting apple sauce or sweet potatoes for oil and butter. (I’d never heard of the sweet potato substitution until this morning.) Are these recipes healthier? Sure. They’ll even help you lose weight. How do they do that? You take one bite and think “this tastes awful, I won;t eat it”. Eat what you want in moderation and you can ignore these recipies entirely.

No two people are alike. Stop trying to shove one size fits all advice into everybody’s stocking.
